  • Jan. 27, 2017              Dr. Tao is awarded the NSF CAREER award with the project titled “CAREER: Integrated Research and Education on Bio-Inspired Burrowing”. Thanks for the support!
  • Jan. 9–12, 2017         The group, including Dr. Tao, Junhong, Hui, Sichuan, Ruotian, Ganesh attended the 2017 TRB annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Dr. Xiangrong Wang, a visiting scholar under Prof. Robert Liang, also joined us. Two oral presentations and two poster presentation were given by the group.
  • Jan. 8, 2017               The group attended the IACIP 2017 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. Junhong and Sichuan was awarded the First Place and Third Place in the Student Poster Competition, respectively. Congratulations!
  • Jan. 3, 2017                Hui’s paper titled “Quantitative Analysis of Piping Erosion Micro-Mechanisms with Coupled CFD and Dem Method” is published by Acta Geotechnica. Congratulations.
  • Fall, 2016                   The group, led by Dr. Tao, made more than 1o field trips for ODOT projects. Such experiences greatly enhanced our understanding about real-life transportation geotechnics.

  • Dec. 1, 2016                Undergraduate student Gwen Baker joins the group as a research assistant. She will work on the ODOT project on recycled glass.
  • Nov. 21, 2016             Sichuan’s paper “Modeling of the burrowing mechanism by razor clam” is accepted by SPIE Smart Structure and NDE conference.
  • Nov. 11, 2016             Dr. Tao attended the NHERI workshop in St. Louis, organized by University of Texas, Austin.

  • August 22, 2016         Ganesh Pandey from Nepal joined the group as a M.S. student. Ganesh will work on ODOT sponsored projects on shoulder reconditioning and sustainable usage of recycled glass. Welcome!
  • Aug. 14-18, 2017        The group, including, Dr. Tao, Junhong, Hui, Sichuan and Ruotian attended the GeoChicago conference. The group made three oral presentations.
  • August 5, 2016           Congratulations to the HS Summer Research Academy fellows Brandon Leap and Nick Robinson on their successful poster presentation on bio-inspired infrastructure! Proud of what you’ve achieved in the very short eight weeks! Congratulations to Junhong Li as well! Junhong did a great job advising these young researchers.

  • June 22, 2016            Ph.D. student Junhong Li was selected for the annual “Civil Engineering Department Scholarship Awards” with $2,500 cash prize. Junhong has been very productive in research since he joined our group in January 2014. Congratulations and thanks for the recognition and support!

  • June 3, 2016              Welcome high school students Brandon Leap and Nicholas Robinson! Brandon and Nick are selected by a highly competitive “HS Summer Research Academy” program at UAkron. They will conduct research on bio-inspired infrastructure in our group. Ph.D. student Junhong Li will serve as a graduate mentor.

  • May 22-25, 2016        Dr. Tao attended EMI 2016/PMC 2016 at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. Dr. Tao made a presentation on “Quantitative Analysis of Piping Erosion Micro-mechanisms with Coupled CFD and DEM Method”
  • March 29, 2016          Dr. Tao received the 2016 Faculty Research Committee Summer Fellowship with $10,000, which will support the research on “Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation as Erosion and Bridge Scour Countermeasure”. Thanks for the support.
  • March 21-24, 2016    Dr. Tao attended SPIE Smart Structures and Materials conference in Les Vegas. Dr. Tao made a presentation on “Hybrid piezo-pyroelectric effects in engergy harvesting from pavements with ferroelectric materials”
  • March 11, 2016          The group held a farewell party to Prof. Haichao Li. Good luck and best wishes, Prof. Li.
  • February 25, 2016     The research group attended the ASCE Cross USA lecture “Geotechnical risk: what is acceptable?” held at Case Western Reserve University. The speaker was  Dr. Jean-Louis Briaud.
  • February 14-17, 2016  Dr. Tao attened the Geotechnical&Structureal Engineering Congress in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Tao made two presentations “DES Investigation on the Effect of Pier Streamlining on the Coherent Dynamics of Turbulence Structure around Piers” and “Stabilization of Peat Subgrade for Existing Roadways Using Geosynthetics Encased Polyurethane Foam Columns: Laboratory Feasibility Study
  • February 9, 2016        Ph.D. student Sichuan Huang (co-advised with Dr. Luo) recieved the software training scholariship in the Itasca Education Partnership (IEP) program. The scholarship covers the tuition to the “PFC Introductory Course”, valued at $2,500. Congratulations and thanks for the support.
